Emerald Bay & Vikingsholm
June 17 (posted 6/18 due to limited internet)
The main event today was visiting Vikingsholm, a cool house built a hundred years ago.
The house is near the water's edge below this rock face. The road is visible in the trees, & one parks at road level & walks a mile down to the house. Of course, that means a steep 1 mile walk back up.
When the house was used as a summer place, visitors would drive down, drive through this entry...
...and arrive in this courtyard. The main house has 6 ensuite bedrooms. The 2 wooden wings housed staff, a garage, & such. The lady who built it was fascinated by the nordic countries, hence the architectural style & features of the house. Her furnishings, all still there, are either 17th c nordic antiques, or reproductions of museum pieces that she had made for the house.
A view of the side of the house & on to the lake gives an idea of the views from the house.
Stopping for a breather on the walk back up gave me time to enjoy this view from above the house. This offshoot of Lake Tahoe is called Emerald Bay, & all of the property around the bay was purchased as part of the lot for the house, & is now protected from development in a couple of state parks.
