pre-rally errands in Q

Image
The rally really runs Thursday-Monday with the pre-rally beginning on Tuesday. However, folks come & go as they please with a few folks arriving weeks in advance or staying weeks afterward. I took this last day before the official start of things to go to town to do laundry, get gas, pick up a few groceries, & get some firewood to contribute to the group.  Quartzsite is a fun & quirky place. These places pass for shops, but you can find just about anything you might need over the winter here.

back to Dome Rock

One of the things I enjoy most about travel is the little things one sees along the way. This unusual load on the back of a tractor-trailer was in a truck stop.   Back at Dome Rock, a lovely sunset was in progress. The rays of the setting sun caught the mountains to the east before the very last rays of the sun caught the clouds to the west. With a number of number of rally friends having arrived during the last 2 days, it felt like coming home.

visiting in Tucson

Before leaving Dome Rock this morning, a lovely sunrise started the day. In Tucson, I had a lovely visit with my step sister & her husband at their winter place, which is in a senior living community. This orange tree is in their back yard, & the other pics were taken around their community.  We had dinner at a great sushi restaurant owned by a friend of theirs.

moving to Dome Rock

This afternoon, I left La Paz County Park, where I've been for almost a month, & moved about 35 miles south to a boon-docking area near Dome Rock. Dome Rock is just west of Quartzsite, AZ, & many fiberglass trailer owners will gather there for a rally next week.  This pic was taken in the County Park.   This home brew camper was in Parker, AZ.  I just love bougainvillea.  This sunset was from a few nights ago.

I'm winding down my hiatus here in Parker where I've camped in one spot for almost a month. While it's been fine for this winter when I wanted a break, my thought is to move around more & see more in future years.  There are often quite a few birds hanging out in the river by the RV park. And here are some of the plants around Parker.                      mesquite tree (most are scrubbier)                                 eucalyptus tree                                                                            I want to know what this is! The day before yesterday, I drove down to Parker (about 7 miles), then across the Colorado River into California, then ab...

This weekend, the county hosted boat races here in the park, which made the place a zoo. Instead of scattered RVs in the dry camping area, we were now packed in.  Besides tons of people, there were boats being towed to the starting line, & then from the finish line back to their site again.   I found the "races" themselves quite boring, as only one boat went down the river at a time, & they actually had to go within a a range of time, so not too fast - not my idea of a race. I can't understand why any of these people found any of this remotely interesting to watch.  I continue to find the variety of rigs in an RV park interesting; probably other people can't understand why I find these remotely interesting.  And then there are the quirky things people put out to decorate their site.  I'll take Mother Nature's site decoration every time.

Yesterday, I took a little day trip to Lake Havasu City, about 35 miles up the road. The big attraction there is is the London Bridge, the one originally built over the River Thames in the 1830's & moved to Arizona in 1968. Actually, only the exterior of the bridge was moved. Though they make a lot of it there, it's a pretty underwhelming site.     The local Walmart has a mural of the bridge in the entryway.  There was some significant rainfall here around New Year's, so the area around the Buckskin Mountains on the way to Havasu was much greener than usual & with more flowers - quite pretty. Normally, the grassy carpet would not be in this first pic, & the space between the scattered shrubs & cactus would just be rocky soil.  The Bill Williams  River National Wildlife Refuge protects a tributary of the Colorado River. It's a surprise to be driving through the desert & come upon this marshy river bottom. The first 2 pics are the Bill Williams...
