Palmer

This morning, I walked around the historic area of town. This log building is the first church built here.  As part of the New Deal, the Roosevelt administration planted a colony of 200 farming families here. Their story is told in a a museum in one of their original houses.  This Musk Ox Farm is believed to be the only one in the world. The animals are treated extremely well.         One in the museum & the 4 babies born this year.  A yearling & a mama with a yearling.  The adults. George's skull is much heavier than it looks.  I plan to go to Hatcher Pass later in the trip to see the views. This sign at a pullout on the Glenn Highway tell a bit of its history.  This shot was taken from the parking lot of a grocery store - lovely views from town.  These pics were taken from an overlook just north of Palmer. 

Wasilla & Palmer

These two towns are only about 10 miles apart & almost blend together. Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry - Wasilla Though not large & with some ho-hum sections, it contained some well-done exhibits & some unique items.  Wasilla Museum - This was a collection of historical buildings.  Palmer Visitor Center & Museum The record-setting vegetables one hears about being grown in Alaska are grown in the Palmer area.                                           Of course, there's a statue of Balto.  Every visitor center should have a piano outside the entry, just in case someone wants to play.  Colony Barns - Palmer The US government planted a farming colony here, & some of the original barns remain. The "snow" in the 4th pic is actually "cotton" from cottonwoods. I have a weird obsession with barns. mountains & cultiva...
