late arrival at Niagara Falls

After driving several hours & crossing the border, I arrived at Riverside Park Motel & Campground just outside Niagara Falls, ON - a day later than planned. 

The hosts of the upcoming rally arrived yesterday. Since I was the only other early bird for the rally, we had a nice long visit this afternoon.

Addendum: The lady I mentioned meeting in yesterday's post was most interesting. She captains a tourist paddle boat in July & August, so she knows a lot about all things relating to boats on the Great Lakes. This boat, really a barge, went by as we talked. She pointed out that the white tower at the rear of the barge is actually part of the tug boat which is pushing it along. The second pic shows the tug inside a cutout in the back end of the barge (hard to see because of the lighting). Many things about the RV lifestyle appeal to me, but the chance to sit a bit & talk to an interesting person might be my favorite; the laid back atmosphere in a campground seems to lend itself to connecting with those around in a way that hotels do not.

The ALCAN & Cassiar

Most of today's drive was on the section of the ALCAN east of Whitehorse, which I'd driven on the way out, so no scenery pics.  There are still some gas pumps in Canada that don't take credit cards. It amazes me that you pump first & then go in to pay.  The Stewart-Cassiar Highway is even more desolate than the ALCAN, so everyone turning south onto the Cassiar stops at the same gas station to fill up. While pumping gas there, a heavy duty truck camper pulled up next to me. Even more than the rig, the map on the side caught my eye. This guy has been on the road for 15 years & been to all of the places on this map - amazing! I got so distracted by the map that I forgot to take a pic of the rig. He bought the truck in Australia with another camper on it. That camper fell apart in South America, so he took the truck to the Netherlands where they built him a custom expedition-style rig. family & a fountain show

After a lovely visit with my sister-in-law early in the day, my brother-in-law, a niece & her husband arrived from Texas in time for dinner. Then we went to Longwood Gardens (outside Phila) to take in the gardens & then a fountain/lights/music show. A grand day.

Wilmington to NYC

I've spend a few days in Wilmington visiting with family, & this morning, my dear sister-in-law took me to the train, so I took an Amtrak train to Penn Central Station in NYC. At the station in Wilmington, the announcements were completely disconnected from what was actually happening with the trains; they would announce a "last call" for a train that had already departed, & announced that one train to NYC was arriving when it was actually another one - just crazy.  A cab took me over the Brooklyn Bridge to a hotel in Brooklyn. There's a lovely walking/biking path with lush greenery along the Hudson River that's just beautiful (not easy to photograph from a cab).  The Manhattan Municipal Building is quite impressive.
