heavenly views

The big adventure today was taking the gondola at Heavenly Ski Resort.

From the resort, you can see one of the gondola towers & the gondola's route part way up the mountain. At the top of this pic is the midway stop.

 

The gondola travels 2 miles up. Pics from inside the car show the scratches in the window.


The views from the platform midway up the mountain are terrific. Yup, that's snow in the foreground.



This view is looking west across the southern end of the lake. 


And this is looking northeast along the eastern/NV side of the lake.



The overnight temps have been near freezing the last 2 nights with daytime highs in the mid 50's, but it will be warming up over the next several days.

Gros Morne: Trout River area

Exploring this little town, I first walked up a headland to the lighthouse; the old lighthouse was charming, but, like many, it's been replaced by a functional red & white modern little tower.                                    Then, I walked up the headland on the other end of town. A late lunch of pickled herring with onions & sour cream along with a bowl of Newfoundland pea soup (split pea soup pureed with lots of carrots & potatoes) topped off my visit. Pinware & Point Amour

My first 5 nights in Labrador are at Pinware River Provincial Park. My campsite is just behind the tree line in the first pic, so the sound of the waves has been lulling me to sleep. This little guy has been a regular visitor to my campsite. The whalebone is on display at the entrance station.  Point Amour Lighthouse is more than 150 years old, is the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, & has quite a lot of history associated with it. When the HMS Raleigh, a British warship, wrecked here in 1922, all the locals pitched in to help rescue the 700 crew & keep them until other ships could take back to England. When a local lady who'd been especially helpful was asked by the crown what they could do for her, she asked for, & was granted, ownership of the cove next to the lighthouse; the current population of 8 are her descendants.

family reunion

Had about 3 dozen folks from Manny's family together here today. We're a loud & crazy group. Most of us came from parts of the East Coast, but 3 of the Texans came, as well as one from Australia. We're so blessed to have each other.
