a mission church & bison

Got back to touring today, heading north from Missoula. The sign about the rattlesnakes woke me up. Most of the signs along here are in English & a Native American language.

First saw a beautiful mission church at St Ignatius, MT. The church dates from the 1890s, & the famous murals inside were painted by the mission cook - amazing. What looks like plaster relief on the pillars & such is all done with paint; these paintings, done by a mission cook, seem like a true miracle to me.

This afternoon took me to the nearby National Bison Range. We got a bit of rain yesterday, a bit more overnight, & then some substantial showers while hanging out with the bison. Hopefully the areas hit by wildfires got at least as much. Met an older Indian guy out on the Bison Range & enjoyed talking with him about his days as a firefighter & such.

My original plan was to go north further into the Flathead Valley, but they are having the worst wildfires in MT, resulting in terrible smoke, so I headed west into Kootenai National Forest instead. Likely won't blog tomorrow as the StarLink connection here is quite unstable. It's taken me nearly 2 hours to get this post put together.
