around Glacier

Today I noodled around the southern & eastern sides of Glacier National Park.

This roadside memorial commemorating the history of the Marias Pass has 3 parts: the obelisk dedicated to T. Roosevelt, the stone memorial remembering the local mountain man/philosopher/landowner who donated his land for the road, & the statue (blending into the trees) memorializing the man who found the route for the road. Before this section of the road was constructed, folks would load their cars on to a rail car at one end & have it freighted across to the other end - & we complain about the hassles of modern travel! I just love this kind of local history, so I took pics of the two most interesting panels.

I got lunch  (& dinner) from this roadside stand. It's a shed built over an old trailer & painted funky colors. The lady who runs it will return to her regular job at the school next week. It's in the town of East Glacier Park, which must be the saddest looking town ever. I ordered fry bread (bread dough deep fried) with butter & honey & an Indian taco (fry bread replacing the taco shell).

It's quite dry east of the park/Rocky Mountains. The mountain views are looking into Glacier.

This was taken from my campground at St Mary, MT, where I'll be tonight & tomorrow night.

Starting about 3:30, I drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road over & back. I took MANY pics, but am too tired to sort & post them tonight, so will post them day after tomorrow, when there won't be much interesting to report.
