first day of rally

A number of new fiberglass trailers arrived today, & a few more will arrive tomorrow. Was fun catching up with folks I met at other rallies & meeting some new folks as well. This evening, one couple from our group hosted a cocktail hour featuring mulled wine along with some other drinks & snacks. 

These pics are to share a bit of what the campground is like. The first pic is taken from my trailer doorway; there's lovely creek beyond the neighbor's trailer. The night-time pic is the trailer on the other side of me, & not from our group - there are 20-25 folks in that trailer & a couple of yurts. My idea of camping involves quietly looking at the night sky, so I won't be sorry to move across the campground tomorrow. 


The first shot is across the campground yesterday & includes a couple of fiberglass trailers. Some folks even decorate for the season.

Gros Morne: Trout River area

Exploring this little town, I first walked up a headland to the lighthouse; the old lighthouse was charming, but, like many, it's been replaced by a functional red & white modern little tower.                                    Then, I walked up the headland on the other end of town. A late lunch of pickled herring with onions & sour cream along with a bowl of Newfoundland pea soup (split pea soup pureed with lots of carrots & potatoes) topped off my visit. Adirondack chairs are quite popular here, & many folks have their own version.                                  After returning from my hike yesterday, I was wiped out. The walk was only 4K & not too steep, so I couldn't figure it out. Then, in the evening, I developed a throat tickle that I just couldn't shake - kept me awake for hours. It hit me this morning that 4 hours in a pub on Wednesday evening probably gave me a cold or Covid - not too bad, just annoying.

family reunion

Had about 3 dozen folks from Manny's family together here today. We're a loud & crazy group. Most of us came from parts of the East Coast, but 3 of the Texans came, as well as one from Australia. We're so blessed to have each other.

Pinware & Point Amour

My first 5 nights in Labrador are at Pinware River Provincial Park. My campsite is just behind the tree line in the first pic, so the sound of the waves has been lulling me to sleep. This little guy has been a regular visitor to my campsite. The whalebone is on display at the entrance station.  Point Amour Lighthouse is more than 150 years old, is the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, & has quite a lot of history associated with it. When the HMS Raleigh, a British warship, wrecked here in 1922, all the locals pitched in to help rescue the 700 crew & keep them until other ships could take back to England. When a local lady who'd been especially helpful was asked by the crown what they could do for her, she asked for, & was granted, ownership of the cove next to the lighthouse; the current population of 8 are her descendants.
