on to the Alabama Hills

Drove through the western part of Death Valley National Park on my way to the Alabama Hills of California. The area is very mountainous, so the drive was beautiful if a bit tedious with a trailer.

The Death Valley area is used for fighter pilot training, & there were often F-18s overhead during my visit. Rainbow Canyon has been nicknamed "Star Wars Canyon" as the planes fly through this narrow canyon with their wings perpendicular to the ground. Looking at how narrow & irregular the canyon is, it seems impossible.

My campground in Lone Pine in the Alabama Hills is quite scenic. To the west are mountains in Death Valley National Park, & to the east is the snowy Sierra Nevada Range; the mountain in the back of the second pic below is Mt Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48.

And if all of this scenery is getting boring, here's a man-made visitor in the campground.
