friends

Spent most of the day with long-time friends from Pittsburgh who now live near Destin, FL. Their home & neighborhood are fantastic. We had a lovely lunch overlooking the Gulf, & a leisurely exploration of the stretch of the Emerald Coast from Destin to Rosemary Beach. The communities are all different, & the beaches are impossibly beautiful. I'm truly blessed.

The ALCAN & Cassiar

Most of today's drive was on the section of the ALCAN east of Whitehorse, which I'd driven on the way out, so no scenery pics.  There are still some gas pumps in Canada that don't take credit cards. It amazes me that you pump first & then go in to pay.  The Stewart-Cassiar Highway is even more desolate than the ALCAN, so everyone turning south onto the Cassiar stops at the same gas station to fill up. While pumping gas there, a heavy duty truck camper pulled up next to me. Even more than the rig, the map on the side caught my eye. This guy has been on the road for 15 years & been to all of the places on this map - amazing! I got so distracted by the map that I forgot to take a pic of the rig. He bought the truck in Australia with another camper on it. That camper fell apart in South America, so he took the truck to the Netherlands where they built him a custom expedition-style rig. family & a fountain show

After a lovely visit with my sister-in-law early in the day, my brother-in-law, a niece & her husband arrived from Texas in time for dinner. Then we went to Longwood Gardens (outside Phila) to take in the gardens & then a fountain/lights/music show. A grand day.

more Kluane NP, YT This is Kathleen Lake from the road, the approach, & the shore.  Klukshu Village, YT  This is the summer home of the Champagne-Aishihik First Nations people. They fish here in the summer & hunt & trap further inland in the winter.  Chilkat Pass, BC At around 3,000' the vegetation here is more alpine.  Chilkat River, AK The river channel is narrow now, but the gravel bars beyond are covered after heavy snow melt. This area is home to a huge number of grizzly bears & bald eagles.  *   *   *   *   * Wildlife sightings  (not counting those in the conservation preserve or the aquarium) --> --> today: a black bear            2 trumpeter swans --> --> trip total so far:       black bears - 6            deer - 2                     grizzlies - 1  ...
