a low key day

The main goal for today was for a long leisurely walk on the Boutte du Cap (a cape shaped like a boot) on Cape St George. Well, after a longish drive out there, the cape was totally enveloped in fog & there was spitting rain. After hanging around for an hour hoping that the fog might lift, I headed back. Had a lobster roll at a cafe & stopped at Walmart to stock up; not surprisingly for an out-of-the-way place, the Walmart was much smaller than any I've see in a long time. Also spent an hour & a half on the phone in the Walmart parking lot working out a technical issue with Verizon.

There was less fog on parts of the drive, so I got a pic of a huge quarry where they are loading the gravel directly onto a small ship. The next pic is a bank of mailboxes, similar to what we have in an apartment or condo complex, but these are located along a main road & serve all of the single family homes & business in an area.

These cemeteries located by the ocean somehow seem so quaint & atmospheric. And here's another tree growing on top of a rock in my campground.

Here are a couple of general observations from my time in NL so far:

- At many gas stations here, one pumps the gas first, & then goes inside to pay for it - a real throwback.

- Many tourist sites aren't open yet. The schools here run until the end of next week, & most outsiders wait for warmer weather in July to come, so it's pretty quiet in the campgrounds & restaurants, & the inns & cabins all have vacancy signs out; their tourist season is really short.
