Battle Harbour

Our day trip left from Mary's Harbour, a cute village on a lovely cove on the southeastern coast of Labrador. The red boat is the one that took us to Battle Harbour.

During the 1:15 trip out to Battle Harbour, which is located on an island, I saw my first ever iceberg...2 of them actually. Then, a few minutes later, we saw a 3rd one, & from the island, a 4th one in the distance. I came to Labrador early in the trip to increase my chances of seeing icebergs & to avoid the worst of the black flies; success on the icebergs, & success on the black flies until late yesterday, when they arrived with a vengeance.

The substantial town of Battle Harbour was active with large-scale cod fishing, as well smaller-scale seal hunting, & other maritime industries. Some of the  buildings date from the 1770s, & have been well preserved due to the moisture & the salt both in the sea air & what was used to salt the cod. The industry was active until the 1960s, & our guide grew up on the island, so he added lots of local color to the tour; he did have a thick local accent, so he was a bit hard to understand at times.

Though cool & quite windy on the island, it was mostly sunny, & back on the mainland now, the temp is in the mid-70s!
