Grenfell, fog, food

Dr. Grenfell is a national hero here, especially along the north coast of Newfoundland & the south coast of Labrador. Beginning in 1892, he brought the first medical care to the thousands of folks here making a living (just barely) by fishing; a visionary, he expanded the mission to bring clinics, schools, churches, co-ops, family gardens, & lumber production. He toured the US & Europe speaking about the needs of the people here & raising funds. In St. Anthony today, I visited the lovely museum dedicated to him & his home, seen in the pic.

The views from my planned walk from Fox Point Lighthouse remain a mystery as they were shrouded in a dense fog. This airplane is an old water bomber used to fight wild fires. The only real town in northern Newfoundland & southern Labrador, St. Anthony has just over 2,000 folks; as the only place bigger than a large village in this whole area, it has a real hospital & other services.

At a local dive, I tried several dishes the last two days. This huge appetizer of mussels was just $9.00 Canadian, about $ 7.00 US. The toutons (pronounced like TOE-tens) are bread dough pan fried & served with molasses. The "squid rings" are prepared like onion rings, are pretty tough on the inside, & taste a bit like crab. After all that, I stopped at a grocery to get something fresh & green, & came up with this bag labelled "greens"; it comes from Terra Nova in eastern NL, & seems to be like a lettuce or spinach.
