Port au Choix
Port au Choix, population 1400, is a mid-sized town for Newfoundland. Like most coastal towns here, fishing seems to be the main business. The name means "port of choice", as there are actually 3 sheltered coves around this little peninsula, each with docks, so you can choose your port.
The main docks are pretty extensive. In the second pic, a tractor trailer has parked out on the dock to be loaded, & 2 more trucks were nearby waiting to load; fishing is big business here.
A lovely short coastal walk took me to Phillips Garden, the site of Groswater (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groswater_culture) & Dorset (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorset_culture) habitation over several thousand years. There isn't much to see at the site, but the walk was great, even in the drizzle.
On the way out to see Point Richie Lighthouse, there were 2 items to see in the barren landscape out near the point. This ecosystem, which looks much like a parking lot, is a gravel barren, & is home to an endangered species of plant, so there are signs all along the road telling us to keep off - who knew? The second pic is a modern navigational device; I'll take the quaint lighthouse every time.
I wanted to see the work of a local artist, but hesitated to go to his studio, knowing that I'd be tempted to buy something. Well, it turns out that he did all of the fun artwork for this little restaurants where I had a mid-afternoon meal.
After the restaurant, I hitched up the trailer & drove an hour+ north through the rain. Though never hard, the rain was steady all day until I pulled into the campground here. As the rain stopped, the wind picked up. 48*, damp, & windy is pretty chilly for mid-June. This pic is from last night, after I posted - a beautiful end to a rainy day.
