the real Newfoundland

While there are a few real towns & the small city of St. John's in NL, it feels like the heart of the place is in the small coastal villages called "outports". I visited 3 of them, all very close together.

Bottle Cove is one of the well-known scenic spots in the province, & it quite captured my imagination. Photos can't really capture the strong sense of place one feels here. The red & white object is the top of an old lighthouse, long since replaced with a modern blob of fiberglass. There were only half dozen houses & maybe a dozen fishing shacks around the cove.

While exploring Bottle Cove, 3 fishing trawlers chugged by & went into a nearby cove. Curious, I followed the road over there to the aptly named Little Port. Behind a shed, I found a stack orange fish baskets, & some big plastic cubes (gray & blue) that I've seen elsewhere & wondered about. Well, the middle cube below is full of fish net, so that seems to be what they are used to store. It was interesting to watch the boats off load their catch, & then everyone hopped into their trucks, sped away, & left a quiet little port behind. Besides the docks & adjacent sheds, there are only 3 homes here.

The 3rd outport was a bit bigger with a couple dozen houses, a gravel pit, a restaurant, & a combo convenience & liquor store. Had a late lunch of cod cakes & picked up some wine.
