Fogo Island: architecture
A local lady went away to college, made a pile of money in finance, & then came back to Fogo to try to stimulate the local economy. Her biggest project was building a world-class, VERY upscale hotel, The Fogo Inn.The 29 rooms are booked for a minimum of 3 nights, & 3 nights run about $10,000, all inclusive. We peons can take a tour, which was quite interesting
Hooked rugs, mats, pillows, & such are a traditional craft here. This hooked cushion cover in the foyer of The Inn shows the 7 seasons on Fogo: winter, pack ice, spring, trap berth, summer, berry, fall.
The wallpapers in the stairwells were designed & made just for The Inn. The rocks moved from the site during construction were placed on the roofs to filter rainfall, which is collected & utilized. The rope chandelier was inspired by fishing nets.
Also at The Inn, there's a library full of books about Newfoundland & by local authors, an art gallery featuring a different local artist each year, & a theater.
Outside the theatre is a marquee showing what's playing that day, & the seat cushion below it was made for this spot.
Another project here was to build 4 artists studios at remote locations around the island to host artists during the summer season. Like The Inn, they are all very contemporary.
It seems that these projects have inspired several folks to build contemporary homes here. While I much prefer the traditional local architecture, it is interesting to see the new coming in.
