Gros Morne: the fjord
I discovered when visiting a cousin in Vermont that they call almost any inland body of water a "pond", even large ones that in most places would be called a lake; it's the same here in NL. Sooooo, Western Brook Pond is really a lake. I call it a fjord in my title here because it started off life as a fjord connected to the ocean, & still feels like a fjord; however, the connection the ocean was closed off long ago, & it's now all fresh water.
First, here's the history lesson...
I was scheduled to take this boat tour yesterday. One starts by hiking in 3K to the boat dock. This pic from yesterday shows the opening in the mountains where the boat follows the lake in between the mountains. Unfortunately, the high winds early in the day became gale force winds by launch time, & the tour yesterday was cancelled.
When I arrived at the beginning of the trail in today, the winds were better, but the low clouds obscured the mountains. Things didn't improve back at the boat dock, & by launch time, the lake was completely socked in.
As we passed the opening into the mountains, a little blue sky appeared, & the worst of the fog lifted.
From then on, there were just enough clouds to add to the drama, & there was something new around every bend.
Looking back from the dock, it was like leaving a fantasy world behind.
