Gros Morne: The Tablelands

Okay, first a bit of explanation about what the Tablelands are. Basically, they were formed from a section of the earth's mantel which was forced to the surface between two tectonic plates. The various geological features here helped geologists formulate the theory of plate tectonics.

Leaving the green forest & venturing out onto the rusty-colored landscape felt a bit like going to a different planet.

On Sunday, the boat tour on Western Brook Pond dropped off a couple of hikers at the far end of the lake. They were then going to hike 35K back to civilization going cross country with no trail, & everyone on the boat cheered them on when they hopped off. I was happy to run into them today out on the Tablelands & see that they survived that hike. They were surprised & touched that everyone had cheered them at drop off. They hiked to the top of the Tablelands today (I just went to the base), & will return home to Halifax, Nova Scotia tomorrow - nice young men.

In the National Park Visitor Centre, these two were hanging out.
