more Fogo Island

This morning I explored the town of Fogo. "Experience Fogo" has several buildings showing how fishing built Fogo. The wooden platform is called a "flake", & it's where salted fish was spread out to dry. The cauldrons were used to boil salt water & pitch, the mixture used to treat fishing nets.

Like most Newfoundland towns, Fogo is situated on a cove with several wharfs for fishing boats. This old merchant residence overlooks the harbour.

When picking up lunch today, this card was in the window. With a population of around 2,500, the island has no bank; for this & other services like a Walmart, these folks must drive to the harbour, take a ferry 1+ hours, then drive more than another hour to Gander, basically an all day trip.

This afternoon, I walked up to Fogo Head. The first 2 pics were taken going up, & the last 4 were taken from top of the head.

And whales!!! Both before & during the walk up, I saw several humpback whales blowing spouts & surfacing. A couple of local older men identified them for me.
