Cape Spear

Here are a couple of pics from the drive out to the cape.

Cape Spear is the eastern-most point of land in North America, so it's a popular place to be at sunrise. A bit earlier in the summer, it's a good place for whale watching.

The first lighthouse was built here in 1836 & is a combo light house & living quarters; for the time & place, the home is actually fairly spacious & elegant. A new lighthouse was built in 1955. Five generations of one family were the light keepers here from 1846-1997, at which time the new lighthouse was automated.

Of interest to history buffs, this was also the site of a radar station & fortifications during World War II.
