southeastern Avalon Peninsula

As I drove south this morning along the Irish Loop, the spruce & fir trees gave way to a more open, grassy landscape. Here's the view from my campsite for tonight.

At the Edge of Avalon Interpretation Centre, I enjoyed displays about the fossils at Mistaken Point UNESCO World Heritage Site, the MANY shipwrecks in the area, & the oceanic barrens landscape.

The landscape driving to Cape Race was ruggedly beautiful.

This display of model boats at a private home was such a fun find.

The most eye-catching feature at Cape Race is the lighthouse.

The Marconi wireless station was just fascinating. Before modern communication method, this station sent & received wireless cables from the many ships crossing the Atlantic & stations as far away as New York City. Most famously, they received the distress call from the Titanic & send ships in the area to rescue survivors. There was even a log of the messages sent to & from the Titanic after she hit the iceberg.

I'm not sure why the water in this cove is such an unusual color, but it looks cool.

Powels Head Light is pretty doggy, but I can't hate on any lighthouse.

It's been interesting to see how each lighthouse here is different from the others.

In most parts of the province, the caribou move from the coastal areas to the higher elevations in the interior for the summer. Here, on the southern Avalon Peninsula, they remain near the coast for the summer, & I was lucky enough to see a herd (if rather far off), & then 2 loners.

And a lovely end to a great day...
