Oklahoma into Texas

On Christmas Day, we went "caroling" at Isaac's grandparent's house; this is Isaac, his brother Ben, & his dad Kyle playing carols for them & some neighbors. Inside, Meredith played a couple of tunes on her violin. 


This pic was taken from my campsite near Tulsa, OK, this morning. I enjoyed the view while trying to line up someone to get the electrical system & heater in my trailer working. Though I called folks in Tulsa & Fort Smith, nobody could look at it until next week. This is understandable given the holiday, but very cold weather is due to move into the area Sun night.


So, I'm heading to Tucson ASAP for warm weather while waiting on repairs & hopefully more RV techs too. Today's drive took me around Tulsa & Oklahoma City, then into Texas around Wichita Falls to the little town of Seymour. The areas around Tulsa & Oklahoma City are fairly hilly, & then the landscape flattens out. Near Lawton in southwestern OK, the Wichita Mountains break up the flat landscape, & there were a number of horses & a polo field in town. Somehow, I didn't expect to see a polo field there. Just past Wichita Falls, a few cotton fields were sprinkled in with the cow pastures.

The town of Seymour is mostly pretty run down, but they have a lovely municipal park with a few campsites (great for a quick stop), & a lovely display of Christmas lights.

Exploring this little town, I first walked up a headland to the lighthouse; the old lighthouse was charming, but, like many, it's been replaced by a functional red & white modern little tower.                                    Then, I walked up the headland on the other end of town. A late lunch of pickled herring with onions & sour cream along with a bowl of Newfoundland pea soup (split pea soup pureed with lots of carrots & potatoes) topped off my visit. Pinware & Point Amour

My first 5 nights in Labrador are at Pinware River Provincial Park. My campsite is just behind the tree line in the first pic, so the sound of the waves has been lulling me to sleep. This little guy has been a regular visitor to my campsite. The whalebone is on display at the entrance station.  Point Amour Lighthouse is more than 150 years old, is the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, & has quite a lot of history associated with it. When the HMS Raleigh, a British warship, wrecked here in 1922, all the locals pitched in to help rescue the 700 crew & keep them until other ships could take back to England. When a local lady who'd been especially helpful was asked by the crown what they could do for her, she asked for, & was granted, ownership of the cove next to the lighthouse; the current population of 8 are her descendants.

family reunion

Had about 3 dozen folks from Manny's family together here today. We're a loud & crazy group. Most of us came from parts of the East Coast, but 3 of the Texans came, as well as one from Australia. We're so blessed to have each other.
