ALCAN, Dawson Creek to Taylor

The Alaska Highway is often called the ALCAN, & today's drive took me just 40 miles along it. Since it's taking me to Alaska, I wore this tee shirt for the occasion.   


It's required to take a picture of this sign. 


The Visitor Info Centre in Dawson Creek is a required stop, & has 2 small museums attached. I've been seeing these black & white birds & now know that they are black billed magpies, thanks to a display in the museum. 


The area around Dawson Creek actually looks a bit like central & eastern PA with a patchwork of trees & farms. 


This statue of a gold panner at the Visitor Info Centre in Taylor is another required stop. Below that is a more serious display at the same place, & below that are 2 other items here that caught my eye.

Exploring this little town, I first walked up a headland to the lighthouse; the old lighthouse was charming, but, like many, it's been replaced by a functional red & white modern little tower.                                    Then, I walked up the headland on the other end of town. A late lunch of pickled herring with onions & sour cream along with a bowl of Newfoundland pea soup (split pea soup pureed with lots of carrots & potatoes) topped off my visit. on the road again

It always takes a while to get organized & launched at the beginning of a trip, so my drive today was only about 300 miles. At a rest stop in Ohio, I filled my water tank & sorted out the water heater after the winter - all systems are now operational.  I'm staying on a little farm in the north east corner of Indiana, where the owner sells a variety of things she grows & makes; I picked up 2 soup bowl cozies & some jams. The heat of the day is giving way to a cooler night, & a cow is mooing in the distance. As sunset nears, a number of swallows are swooping around.

ALCAN, Coal River BC to Watson Lake YT

The topography & the trees changed today as I drove westward. Shortly past Coal River, the snow-capped rocky mountains gave way to big rolling hills; the poplars & spruce gave way to aspen & pines.   According to the guidebook, the road crossed the border 6 times, but since I started in British Columbia (BC) & ended in the Yukon Territory (YT), my fancy math tells me that if must have been 5 times. The border is a straight line along the 60th Parallel, but the road winds over hill & dale. The map showing that the 60th Parallel passes by Helsinki & through the Shetland Islands gave a clue as to why it was cooler today - high around 50*.    Thought there weren't as many animals along the roadsides today as the past 2 days, a big ole bison was right beside the road, & a moose hung out for a while as several of us watched.  In Watson Lake, there is an okay movie about the aurora borealis at the Northern Lights Centre.
