ALCAN, Fort Nelson to Muncho Lake

It was a banner day with a bit of history, beautiful scenery, & so much wildlife!

History: the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum

The local history museum at Fort St John was beautifully organized & curated to tell the story of that place from 10,000 years ago well into the last century. This museum had way more artifacts on display, & many were grouped by type (a collection of saws, about 20 antique cars in a shed, etc), but there was little info on what one was looking at. These differences are part of the charm of local history museums.

The 3 monuments out front commemorated early explorers in the area, the men who built the Alaska Highway, & the men who died attempting to build it.

Scenery

After 2 days of okay scenery along the ALCAN, today, it became quite nice.

Stone Mountain, Summit Lake, Folded Mountain (notice the folded rock)

Muncho Lake where I'm camped tonight.

Wildlife: Moose & caribou & bears, oh my!

All of these were along the highway & viewed from safely inside my truck. I spent 20 minutes watching these two (yearlings?) eat, start to wrestle, then eat some more.

Then they went through a culvert to the other side of the highway - smart bears!

According to my reading, the sheep in this area are either stone sheep (dark in color), or Dall sheep (white), so I'm claiming to have seen 5 stone sheep.

This looked like another yearling to me.

This caribou wasn't waiting around for me to get a nice clear picture. The adult female moose I saw a few minutes later moved into the woods so quickly that I didn't get any picture at all.

This looked like an adult bear. Unlike the yearlings, this one moved off almost as soon as I stopped.

PS. The "famous" cinnamon rolls at Testa Lodge (note the sign) definitely lived up to their billing - hot & yummy!
