ALCAN, Teslin YT
The village of Teslin has a population of less than 500, mostly Tlingit people (the local First Nations tribe). Most Tlingit were & are a coastal people, but 3 small groups moved inland in the mid-1800s to trap, hunt, & fish.
The most interesting member of these groups was George Johnston, & the beautiful local museum uses his life to tell the story of these Tlingit groups. George did 3 unusual things. He bought a camera in the late 1910s, and took & developed thousands of photographs of local people over the next 25 years. He bought a car in 1929, & had it brought to Teslin by boat. After the Alaska Highway was built, he opened a general store alongside of it.
His photos documented every facet of daily life here. This one of a group of children "playing funeral" captured so much of that life.
This story of his car is wild & crazy & wonderful.
Spring is arriving here in Teslin.
The Yukon Motel includes the RV park with this view, & a surprisingly good restaurant, along with all the needed services like gas, laundromat, ATM, fresh water, propane, & a dump station. The trading post across the street has a decent selection of groceries. It's been a nice place to stop for 2 nights.
