Dredge No 4 NHS
After the initial Klondike Gold Rush in 1898, few individual miners were finding very much panning in the creeks. At that point, big commercial operations moved in with huge dredges to dig up & sort the rock.
These pictures show the unspoiled local landscape, some of the rock piles left from the dredges (there are miles of these), & modern mining in the area.
This is the whole dredge & a pic of just the back end.
This is the machine shop that was needed to support the dredge.
This big tube is just 1 piece of the dredge; note the man standing inside the tube.
Tombstone Territorial Park & Dempster Highway
The Dempster Highway is a famous route north to the Arctic Ocean. The designation of "highway" is deceptive as it is all dirt. I just drove up about 60 miles through the Tombstone Mountains, the most scenic section.

I'm sorry to have posted so many pics today, but this blog is also my journal & photo album from the trip, & I wanted to save all of these for me.
