Klondike Highway to Skagway
The drive to & from Skagway (from Carcross) was about 60 miles each way, & every mile was just beautiful. The 6th & 7th pics below are in an area of alpine lakes where there was still ice on many of them.
It took me a minute to figure out what these poles over the road are all about; I think they are to show where the road is when it's drifted so full of snow that the roadway isn't obvious.
The town of Skagway is quite touristy, but these tourist $$$ make it possible to keep the many historic buildings in top shape. The town boomed in 1898 when it became the gateway to the Klondike during the Gold Rush. Note the 3 cruise ships in port.
The 2 local museums feature a good collections of local historical items, with one having a nice collection of scrimshaw.
This is the most unusual building in town, as the facade is covered in driftwood, giving it an odd haunted look.
