A couple of the rivers were full of water, but several of them were just big washes of sand & gravel. The torrents that wash all of this down here must be fearsome.

It was interesting to read about the ranching & farming in this area. 


The Delta Meat & Sausage Co is an institution here & specializes in exotic meats. I purchased some bison burger & bison brats.

Loved that the swinging door into the kitchen is a refrigerator door. The Fairbanks newspaper has an interesting name & dramatic front page.

more wildfire smoke

The gray haze between the green trees & white clouds is smoke from the fires around Fairbanks. The lady & her 2 kids who I camped next to last night live in Fairbanks. The evacuation zone was 1 mile from their house, so they each texted her husband 3 items he was to put in the truck for them in case he had to evacuate; the fire turned this morning, so they should be okay. Smoke has seeped in all over during the last few hours & is now noticeable with each breath.

Exploring this little town, I first walked up a headland to the lighthouse; the old lighthouse was charming, but, like many, it's been replaced by a functional red & white modern little tower.                                    Then, I walked up the headland on the other end of town. A late lunch of pickled herring with onions & sour cream along with a bowl of Newfoundland pea soup (split pea soup pureed with lots of carrots & potatoes) topped off my visit. Alaska!

Top-of-the-World Highway This road runs from Dawson City in the Yukon into Alaska. The 110-mile drive today was a dirt road with the exception of a 9-mile long paved stretch in the middle - seems odd to have a short paved stretch in the middle of a long dirt highway.  arrived in Alaska! I've wanted to come to Alaska since I was 14. My day trip to Skagway last week was to a small corner of Alaska, but that corner isn't connected to this main part of the state, so this feels like my official arrival.                                         Chicken, Alaska Apparently, the original residents here wanted to name the town after a chicken-like bird called a ptarmigan. However, they couldn't agree on how to spell that, so they compromised on "Chicken". It became a small town when the Pedro Dredge (now a National Historic Site) was set up here to dig for gold. on the road again

It always takes a while to get organized & launched at the beginning of a trip, so my drive today was only about 300 miles. At a rest stop in Ohio, I filled my water tank & sorted out the water heater after the winter - all systems are now operational.  I'm staying on a little farm in the north east corner of Indiana, where the owner sells a variety of things she grows & makes; I picked up 2 soup bowl cozies & some jams. The heat of the day is giving way to a cooler night, & a cow is mooing in the distance. As sunset nears, a number of swallows are swooping around.
