Whitehorse
The population of YT is about 40,000, & 2/3 of those live here in Whitehorse. The Yukon River, unusually low right now, dominates the downtown.
The S. S. Klondike is undergoing a 4-year restoration, but the movie about its history was interesting. There are many long lakes in this area along with the rivers, & before roads came through, several rail lines & these paddle wheelers were a main form of transportation, especially for delivering cargo.
In this wooded area, the lower branches have been pruned off & taken away in order to make wildfires less severe (limited fuel for the fire).
The Yukon Territorial Assembly Building is...
The McBride Museum does a lovely job of covering most everything about the Yukon. Here are a few items I particularly enjoyed.
The McBride, like almost every museum here, has a lovely wildlife gallery.
This collection of fur coats is interesting as only the middle 3 are ladies dress coats; the others are work-a-day items needed for warmth.
Even the bathroom in the McBride is interesting.
Fun fact: When folks here talk about leaving The Yukon, they say that they are "going outside".
Another fun fact: Sunset today in Whitehorse is 11:28, & sunrise is 4:31; it's never what one would call dark, more like twilight for about an hour in the middle of the "night". In Fairbanks, where I'll be on June 21, sunset will be 12:58am & sunrise will be 2:48am. This really does mess with one's sleeping, even when using a sleep mask/eye shade.
