Anchorage - museum, alehouse, trolley tour, misc

Anchorage Museum

This huge modern museum has extensive exhibits on many facets of Alaska including hands on science, art, history, & native cultures. It would have been overwhelming, except that I'd seen some similar exhibits elsewhere on this trip.

These little decorative blankets were put on sled dogs just before the team was to enter into town.

Humpy's Alehouse

I can't comment on their ale, but their smoked salmon chowder was great. It was packed & soon had a line out the door, as it's a mandatory stop here.

Trolley Tour (fantastic!)

Adjacent to the international airport is this small planes airport around Lake Spenard, where 1100 planes are based. On a nice day on a summer weekend, there might be as many as 800 takeoffs & landings. There are 3 million lakes in Alaska of at least 20 acres where a float plan can land.

The door handle of this big souvenir shop caught my eye; other oldsters might also remember having a Woolworth's in their town growing up.

On the waterfront by the small boat launch is this statue of Grandmother Olga, a local native woman, along with her fish drying rack & her fish trap (at the left of the pic). From this point is a view back to downtown. The green belt in the mid-ground is the land that dropped 11+' in the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964, which measured 9.2.

The active port here is where 90% of all imported goods come into Alaska land.
