southern Kenai Peninsula

Village of Ninilchik

Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church sits on a hill with a great view of Mount Redoubt across the bay.

The small boat marina is interesting. Shown here at low tide, the commercial fishing boats are sitting on the bottom of the river & too close together to move a boat out from the pack. They all go out together at high tide & return on the next high tide. Also, there is no fuel here; they are fueled out in the bay (Cook Inlet) by a fueling vessel. This marina is at the end of Airport Road. I walked down the road expecting an air strip at the end, then realized that the road IS the air strip - a brilliant example of duel use.

along the road

There are many areas like this with small trees coming in. Such a spot has been a lake, which filled in over many centuries & will now be taken over by woodland species. This cute mailbox is a replica of a storage box built on stilts by Native Americans to keep their food caches out of the reach of animals.

The Iliano Volcano was showing signs of activity recently, but has now calmed down.

Homer

An overlook coming into town was a nice introduction to the area.

The 3 shots of Kachemak Bay show it from left to right. In the first shot, just below & to the right of the center of the pic, is the Homer Spit; I'll camp there the next 3 nights. The bank of fog got thicker as one moved deeper into the bay. It looks fake in the second 2 pics & looked just as surreal in person.

The Salty Dawg is an institution here, but I found the interior very depressing.

The boat harbor is quite large with every kind of boat imaginable in there, from fishing dinghies to a yacht to a cruise ship.

  1. Love that view from the top of Baycrest Hill above Homer. I hope you enjoy your time at the “end of the road!”
