village of Hope

Hope is a quaint village set in a lovely location, with volunteer efforts obvious everywhere; I fell in love. The town has made the place inviting for tourists without making it cheap & touristy. The population is less than 200.

Main Street

My campsite here is at the end of Main Street on the shore of Turnagain Arm. Main Street is all of 2 blocks long.

The "suburban mall"

This collection of 4 buildings around a small parking area consists of an espresso shop, the library, a gift shop to support the library, & a used bookstore to support the library. Except for the espresso shop, they are staffed by volunteers.

The Historical Society Museum

This too was developed by & is staffed by volunteers. It's possibly the best local history museum I've ever seen - amazing considering the tiny size of the town & it being an all-volunteer effort.

Around town

Most of the buildings here are from the gold rush era & shortly afterward. The others are mostly built to fit in with those, but one person just had to be different.

miscellaneous

These signs about the mudflats are posted all around Turnagain Arm. The knobs on these porch posts are natural, & these trees were selected for the character that these knobs add.

Most every town in Alaska has an airstrip. There were 8 small panes parked at this airstrip - amazing for a village of less than 200.

If I ever disappear, look for me in Hope, Alaska.
