Overnight, I noticed that it is actually now fairly dark for a couple of hours overnight; this is the first time in 2 months that I've seen darkness.
Another thing seen here in Haines, elsewhere in AK & the Yukon, & last summer in Newfoundland, is what I think of as combo businesses. In these small towns, a business can't make it in 1 niche, so they combine 2 or 3 in 1 business. In Haines, there is a Radio Shack & a U-haul together, & a small building of waterfront condos has a car/truck wash attached on the roadside. My favorite in NL was a big hardware store that had 3 rows of liquor down the middle.
Haines
Like Skagway & Seward, Haines gets many cruise ships in the summer.

This baby porcupine is one part adorable & 1 part terrifying.
loading the ferry
The other ferries I've taken a car/truck on loaded from the stem or stern; you drove on one end & off the other end, as all the vehicles got on one place & got off at another. This ferry has vehicles getting on & off at 8 places, so they must load them on in such a way that those getting off later don't block in those getting off earlier. Add in that there is every imaginable type of vehicle, from motorcycles to 30+' moving trucks & huge trailers, & it seems like a logistical nightmare. We drove on through the side of the boat, with some going fore & some going aft. No wonder loading took a long time.
These 2 black tanks with green lids are septic tanks, & this trailer was taken onto the ferry by a truck in Haines & will be taken off in Ketchikan by another truck - just the trailer stayed on the ferry.
