Juneau - downtown sites

Juneau-Douglas City Museum

This was another lovely local Alaskan museum, with exhibits on many facets of the history & culture here.

State Capitol

The simple building has only a few ornaments, like the bas relief panels in the foyer, literally tucked between the 2 sets of entry doors.

Sealaska Heritage Center

This beautiful museum tells of the Tlingit & Haida Native cultures. The centerpiece is a replica of a clan house, which visitors can go into. Modern clan houses are used for cultural events & celebrations & are generally closed to outsiders.

Traditionally, 40-50 clan members would live in such a house, where cooking over the fire was done in the center, folks ate & did activities on the surrounding elevated level, & everyone slept on the upper level by the walls.

The workmanship on this clan house amazed me.

The exhibits included masks & outfits worn for dancing.

The current artist-in-residence is a weaver - fascinating to watch.

along the cruise ship docks

A float plane was landing, & others were lined up to take cruise ship passengers on flight-seeing tours.

These whale tail sculptures line the cruise ship docks.
