Ketchikan - last day
Since today was dedicated to doing laundry & a few other errands, today's pics are a miscellany of shots I've taken over my 10 days here.
around Ketchikan
These small boat harbors in every coastal town here are interesting places to wander around.
The shipping dock is an important hub since this is an island. THE barge arrives on Tues, so it's best to buy your fresh fruits & veggies on Wed. The outbound barge leaves on Thursday (see below). Float planes are taking off & landing almost continuously in nice weather, & still steadily in the fog & rain.
In Pittsburgh, we have many flights of concrete steps scattered around connecting parts of the city separated by steep hillsides. The wooden steps here are just as ubiquitous & maybe even longer on average.
The Walmart here is one of the 4 smallest anywhere. Though the town encouraged Walmart to come, they did limit what groceries they can sell in order to protect the existing grocery stores.
Many folks here have several small businesses. Herring Cove draws bus & van loads of tourists during the late summer to look for bears feeding, so a fishing concern across the street sells coffee, cookies, fudge, & local jams & jellies during this time.
This fraternal organization is not an Alaskan thing, but this is the first place I noticed it. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improved_Order_of_Red_Men)
It's just expected here to look out from the grocery store parking lot & see a boat of some sort cruising by.
my abode
Though called Anchor Inn, this place is actually several small apartments on the lower level of a private home. It's located in a quiet spot well south of town & right on the water.
The beach in front of the house features tide pools & eagles.
Every type of boat imaginable chugs past here at some point, from little fishing & pleasure boats to huge cruise ships.
