Driving across the Texas Hill Country

As I pulled out of the campground this morning, the peahen was having her breakfast. 


The first pic is by the campground at Caverns of Sonora, near Sonora, Texas, on the western edge of the Hill Country. The next pic was taken a bit further east off of I-10. 


I arrived late this afternoon at Pecan Park Riverside RV Park near San Marcos, TX, where I'll be for 5 nights.

The ALCAN & Cassiar

Most of today's drive was on the section of the ALCAN east of Whitehorse, which I'd driven on the way out, so no scenery pics.  There are still some gas pumps in Canada that don't take credit cards. It amazes me that you pump first & then go in to pay.  The Stewart-Cassiar Highway is even more desolate than the ALCAN, so everyone turning south onto the Cassiar stops at the same gas station to fill up. While pumping gas there, a heavy duty truck camper pulled up next to me. Even more than the rig, the map on the side caught my eye. This guy has been on the road for 15 years & been to all of the places on this map - amazing! I got so distracted by the map that I forgot to take a pic of the rig. He bought the truck in Australia with another camper on it. That camper fell apart in South America, so he took the truck to the Netherlands where they built him a custom expedition-style rig. family & a fountain show

After a lovely visit with my sister-in-law early in the day, my brother-in-law, a niece & her husband arrived from Texas in time for dinner. Then we went to Longwood Gardens (outside Phila) to take in the gardens & then a fountain/lights/music show. A grand day.

Lake Superior

Much of my drive today was along the north shore of Lake Superior. Thunder Bay is a decent-sized town, but otherwise, this stretch ranges between rural & desolate. The place I stopped for gas still has a gas pump without a credit card reader, so one pumps the gas & then goes inside to pay - a real throwback. Like most of these places, they offer a combo of gas, rooms, & convenience store. Outside of Thunder Bay, this modern bridge was the only thing that felt like the 21st century all day. There were some aspens along the edges, but most of the forest here is a mix of evergreens. It's surprised me how few (white-tailed) deer I've seen, especially compared to other animals. The 2 deer I saw together today were quite small with definite spots, like what I'd expect to see in June.
